Faith Leaders To Catholics: End Gay Marriage Fight

BOSTON (CBS4) ― Religious leaders from several faiths met in Boston Tuesday to demand Catholic bishops in Massachusetts end their fight against same-sex marriage.

The Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry said marriage is a civil ceremony that gay couples are entitled to under the law in Massachusetts.

"We really need to keep the separation of church and state clear, so that one religious belief does not become the law of the land," United Methodist Minister Tiffany Steinwert of Winthrop told WBZ Radio's Carl Stevens.

The executive director of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference told the Boston Globe the issue should be left up to voters to decide.

``In no way does the church seek to intentionally discriminate against any individual or deny anyone their legal rights," Edward F. Saunders Jr. told the Globe. ``But there is a difference of opinion here, and that's democracy, and what it points out [is] that this is an issue that the public should have a right to have their say on."

Saunders represents the four Catholic bishops in Massachusetts at the State House.
